| Couplings |
 |
| BEI couplings are high performance, helical-cut beam style providing the best combination of torsional rigidity and compensation for shaft misalignment. They are made of aluminum and are iridite coated to resist chemical attack.

Application Solutions |
Installation Misalignment
Encoders in an installation continually had shafts locking up, indicating improper installation. Flexible couplings were being used, however they were an elastomeric "u-joint" type, which are inexpensive, but not suitable for encoder use. This type of coupling starts out with significant misalignments since the elastomeric component cannot be manufactured to very tight tolerances. Once the installation used BEI's more suitable, metal, helical-cut coupling, the problem was solved.

Wind-up and Oscillation
In a servo motor application, a customer was having difficulty tuning a velocity control loop. The servo motor should be able to respond quicker without oscillating, but they were having trouble getting it to settle down.
The motor and drive were tested in an open-loop configuration. The encoder seemed to be giving erratic output during acceleration. This encoder was coupled to the motor via a mechanical coupling. However, it was found this coupling was too soft for this application and was exhibiting wind-up and oscillation.
By installing BEI's stiffer servo coupling, the wind-up and oscillation problem went away. |
